Cornwall Cornwall Letters

Home buyers pack will not resolve the problems

Criticism of Cousin Jack Society less than fair

FOLLOWING a broadside from a Packet reader of Leeds, in February, that indicated don't be fooled by the Cousin Jack Society propaganda, let me respond with a defence and first- hand account of said society.  more...

SWW chooses to ignore obscene increase in bill

NO doubt, by now, all will have received their once again inflated water bills from SW Water. I was amused by their opening paragraph whereby they were delighted to give us £20 credit, enabled due to the re-structuring of the company's finances.   more...

Tolvaddon staff will be late if bus cuts go ahead

EXTRACTS from a letter to Cornwall county council, and copied to the Packet: I have just received a letter dated March 8 from David Rabey, of the Truronian Bus company, saying that the 42 bus I normally catch to work will not include the section between Tolvaddon and Roscroggan when Truronian take over in April.   more...

Let's mobilise public opinion to stop rail cuts

A few weeks ago the Skipper admonished Falmouth's county councillors for not using the train to get to work in Truro. A pity he did not ring me before rushing into print. I could have told him that one of the first things I did after being elected was to go into Newells to pick up a rail timetable. I also bought some photos for use in a railcard.  more...

Clampers pounced while I was getting a pass

I wish to draw the attention of the residents of Charter Close, Penryn, to the fact that someone there is looking out and ringing Armtrac security services when they think a car is parked in the car park there without a parking pass, even though this may only be for a short period of time, as happened to me when I went to one of the flats to get a pass and the shopping list of the lady who lived there. When I returned I found the Armtrac employee had just clamped my car, even though I had left a note on the dashboard to say where I was and why.  more...

We don't want another money-grabbing scheme

HERE we go again. Yet another "get rich quick" developer. This time it's Norwegian Rolf Munding, who proposes to build a luxury hotel, two restaurants, a Roman-style amphitheatre and some "affordable" riverside apartments at Falmouth Wharves. And if you believe the latter you'll believe anything!   more...

What happened to their promise of fair tax?

The Lib-Dems got into power with the promise of "Axe the tax" but again we locals are being forced to pay. In Falmouth we are having so many iron gates put up around new luxury buildings and the people who buy them only pay 90% and most of the student landlords do not pay a penny. Again we locals are having to fork out for all services that these people get away with.  more...

Does anyone know more about the Lowry family?

I have just read David Barnicoat's article about the new pilot boat "Arrow" in the Packet sent by a relative in Falmouth. I refer to the information about the Lowry family's involvement in the pilot service. My husband is Richard Lowry (who incidentally is a master mariner) and he has connections to the Falmouth Pilot Lowry family. We have in our family tree Charles William Lowry (son of William Rowe Lowry), who married Elizabeth (nee Jones) and they had a daughter Elizabeth Ann. Charles Wm was a Trinity pilot and I am wondering if anyone knows if either of these Elizabeths could be the one mentioned in the Packet article. We also have a William James Lowry, Gustavus Lowry and Edwin Rowe Lowry who were all pilots and the Southeard family (also pilots) by marriage.  more...
